Mod Wii – How to Copy & Play Wii Games Without a Mod Chip

With the Wii being one of the most popular games consoles, it’s no wonder that many people want to protect their games by copying them and making backups. This is a legal activity, as long as you fully own the game you are copying… however, there is a problem in the form of copyright protection. Luckily, there’s a way to get round this, so you can play backup versions of your games on your Wii without any mod chips.

The problem with copying Wii games is actually quite simple. Because a lot of people were copying Wii games illegally, Nintendo decided to put some copyright protection measures in place. These measures are quite basic – just a level of encryption that only the Wii can read.

When Nintendo makes a game for the Wii, it’s actually saved onto DVD in a special format – which only the Wii can understand. This encrypted format is what makes the game so hard to copy – because when you try and copy the game in a DVD burner, your PC cannot read it properly, and ends up just copying a lot of random words and letters. This means that if you want to backup your Wii games by copying them, you need to be able to get a DVD tool / burner which can read the encrypted Wii games and then copy them accordingly.

This is often referred to as the “holy grail” of the Wii copying community, because finding a tool which can read and copy the encrypted Wii game DVDs is a tough task. Luckily, there are a handful of tools which can copy Wii games for you… and if you can find one which makes perfect 1:1 copies of your games, you can play your backups inside your Wii without the need for any sort of mod chip.

You can actually copy Wii games very easily with a tool called “GameBackupSystem“. This tool has been created by an anonymous team, but we were able to backup and play 20+ Wii games with it. It copies your game discs perfectly, including the copyright encryption. This means that you can copy as many games as you want with the system, and then play them on your console without a mod chip.
