Mod chips on a Wii console?

Is it legal to install or have someone install a mod chip on the disk drive of a Wii to make it play any dick for playing ROM (read only memory)? If it is legal, where can I buy a mod chip? If everything like that is legal, can my wii be somehow “rendered useless” by a console update from Nintendo aimed to counter the use of Mod Chips?
